Carmel Preran: For
Daily Reflections on the Word of God and Daily
Prayers
Living Flame: For
Carmelite Spirituality & Catholic Theology
THE PRECAUTIONS
(St. John of the Cross)
Dear
Friends,
The Precautions of St. John of the Cross are a precious
treasure for those who wish to live an authentic
Christian life and attain perfection of Christian
charity within a short period of time. When reading the
Precautions, we may feel they are hard and too tough to
practice, but the intention of St. John of the Cross was
to help the aspirants to experience God in their daily
life and be united with Him on a daily basis regardless
of the difficulties involved. These are very practical
recommendations and are helpful for spiritual direction
and discernment. Here I have prepared a short commentary
on these precautions, which I presume will be useful for
spiritual reading and spiritual growth. These
reflections will be uploaded on the Carmelite Website of
our Province shortly.
Golden
Threads of Grace: 50 Years of St. Anthony’s
Blessings at Watre - 1975 to 2025 Every
celebration is an opportunity to thank the Lord for
His marvellous blessings. Jubilee celebrations, in
particular, are sacred milestones—a time to pause,
reflect, and praise God for His wonders. The
faithful of Watre have experienced God’s tender
love, care, and protection through the powerful
intercession of their beloved patron, St. Anthony of
Padua. The grace and blessings received over the
past 50 years are so abundant that words cannot
fully express them. The Golden Jubilee of St.
Anthony’s Chapel, Watre, was celebrated with great
joy and solemnity on May 16, 2025, marking 50
glorious years of divine blessings. A series of
spiritual, social, and cultural events were
organized to make this celebration meaningful and
memorable.
Highlights of the Jubilee Celebrations

Year was formally inaugurated on January 6 by Fr.
Cyprian Fernandes and Fr. Joachim Rodrigues with a
solemn procession carrying the statue of St. Anthony

Eucharist in honour of St. Anthony followed. The
Jubilee logo and theme were unveiled: “ಭರ್ವಸ್ಯಾಚೆ
ವಾಟೆರ್, ಭೊಗ್ಸಾಣ್ಯಾಚೆ ಸೊಜೆರ್”
2. February 23 to April 13, 2025 – St. Anthony
Visits Every Home: As part of the spiritual
preparation, the statue of St. Anthony was taken to
all 43 houses in the village. Families gathered
around the saint’s portrait to offer prayers of
thanksgiving. This time of prayer included the
Rosary, the Novena to St. Anthony, and other
devotions, helping families grow in faith and unity.

the restoration of a vital space in our community
but also a renewed commitment to our shared mission
and service. Key renovations include: • Beautification of the sanctuary in the Chapel
• New sanitary fixtures in the rooms of the friars

The blessing of the renovated building was solemnly
carried out by Rev. Fr. Silvestre D’Souza, the
Provincial of the Karnataka-Goa Province on June 03,
2025. This was followed by a Eucharistic
celebration, presided over by Fr. Provincial, who
also preached a thought-provoking homily. In his
message, he reflected on the missionary zeal of St.
Paul, who served the Lord not only publicly through
powerful oratory but also with a personal touch,
visiting homes and living a life free of hypocrisy.
He encouraged the faithful to emulate this spirit,
guided by the Holy Spirit.
Enkindled
by the Word, Enlightened in Truth: Lectio Brevis at
Pushpashrama The
Pushpashrama Institute of Philosophy and Religion
solemnly inaugurated the Academic Year 2025–2026
with the Lectio Brevis on Saturday, May 31. The
celebration commenced with the Holy Eucharist,
presided over by Rev. Fr. Silvestre D'Souza,
Provincial of the Karnataka-Goa Province, and
concelebrated by eleven priests. Centered on the
theme "Enkindled by the Word, Enlightened in Truth,"
the Eucharistic celebration set a reflective and
inspiring tone for the new academic year. In his
homily, Fr. Provincial exhorted the brothers to
integrate their spiritual formation with
philosophical inquiry, fostering a holistic
understanding grounded in faith and reason. The
official inauguration ceremony followed, beginning
with a prayer song and a warm welcome by the Rector,
Rev. Fr. Oswald Crasta, who acknowledged the
gracious presence of several dignitaries. Among them
were Fr. Archibald Gonsalves, Vice-Provincial; Fr.
John Sequeira, Provincial Prefect of Studies; and a
number of priests from neighbouring communities,
whose participation added solemnity and joy to the
occasion. Rev. Fr. Wilfred Rodrigues, the Dean,
presented a detailed report of the previous academic
year, highlighting significant milestones and
academic progress. He also outlined the academic
program for 2025–2026, noting the enrolment of 30
students who are preparing themselves for
philosophical and theological formation. A key
moment in the event was the release of the
Pushpashrama Handbook and Calendar 2025–2026, an
essential guide for the year ahead.
Commencement
of the Common Novitiate Year @ Kurnool Carmel
From 1st June 2025 to 31st May 2026 On
the eve of the Solemnity of the Ascension, the
Carmel of St Joseph, Kurnool rejoiced with a double
blessing—the beginning of the Common Novitiate Year,
which beautifully coincided with the Feast of the
Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 31st May
2025. With a heartfelt invocation to the Holy
Spirit, the novices offered themselves to the
maternal care of Mother Mary. Recognizing her as the
perfect model of a Carmelite—who pondered the Word
of God and treasured it in her heart—they entrusted
their formation journey to her. Acknowledging her as
a teacher in the life of faith, hope, and charity,
each novice symbolically placed herself at Mary’s
feet, seeking her guidance in growing to resemble
her Son, Jesus, and in following her example through
the imitation of her virtues. The community also
lifted prayers of gratitude for the members of the
formation house, thanking God for their generous
dedication and love. They prayed that the Lord might
continue to bless them with the graces necessary to
be a living model of prayer and love for all those
taking part in the novitiate programme.
Lighting
the Path of Hope : Scholarships Awarded to Children
of Visually Impaired Parents Bengaluru,
May 25: A Carmelite NGO, Dhyana Jyothi Trust,
stepped in to make a small but considerate impact in
the lives of the children of thirty Visually
Impaired parents that depicted a noble purpose of
Love and Charity. Under the banner, 'Carmel Vision
for the Future’ scholarships of approximately Rs 6
Lakhs were provided for 30 children on 25th May,
2025 at Maria Niketan High School hall, Bengaluru.
The programme began with a prayer service. Mrs.
Nelly Prichardo, the coordinator, extended a warm
welcome to everyone. Fr. Silvestre Dsouza, the
Provincial of the Karnataka-Goa- Province, was the
Chief Guest for the occasion. Fr. Ivan D'souza,
Director of the Dhyana Jyothi Trust, was also
present. In his message, Fr. Silvestre Dsouza
highlighted the significant milestone of completing
eleven years of service in the Scholarship Programme.
He emphasized that providing education to
children—especially those whose parents are visually
impaired—is a noble Carmelite venture. Despite their
blindness, these parents hold a strong desire to
brighten the future of their children. Recognizing
this, the Carmelite priests have undertaken this
unique initiative with the generous support of
donors and benefactors. Nelly Prichardo, the
coordinator of ‘Carmel Vision for Future,’ shared
her thoughts, saying, The parents of these children
are not only visually impaired but also financially
poor. As a result, they are unable to afford their
children's education. However, these children are
exceptionally talented and perform very well in
their studies. We believe it is our responsibility
to extend a helping hand. She further explained that
many of these parents suffer from total or partial
blindness and struggle to earn a livelihood. While
they find it extremely difficult to provide for
their children’s education, the children, despite
their academic excellence, lack the financial
support they need.
Installation
of Infant Jesus Statue and Feast Celebration at
Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre Edmonton May
24, 2025, marked a historic and grace-filled day at
Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre, as over six
hundred faithful gathered with deep devotion to
celebrate the Feast of the Infant Jesus of Prague.
This celebration, made memorable by the installation
of the sacred statue, will remain etched in the
hearts of all who were present. The inspiration
behind the feast was Fr. Jerome Moras, OCD, whose
vision was supported by the generous donation of a
sacred replica of the Divine Infant by Mrs. Susan
Papas Hauck, a devoted promoter of this devotion for
over twenty-seven years. In preparation for the
feast, a triduum was held, featuring spiritual
reflections by Fr. Rudolf D’Souza, Fr. Israel
Gonsalves, and Fr. Mario Fernandes. On the feast
day, a solemn pontifical Mass was presided over by
His Excellency, Bishop Gary Anthony Franken, Bishop
of the Diocese of St. Paul, Alberta. Following the
Eucharistic celebration, the Statue of the Infant
Jesus was carried in a grand procession accompanied
by litanies, hymns, and a vibrant performance by the
Sinulog Dancers of the Filipino community. After the
procession, Bishop Franken solemnly enshrined the
statue in the side chapel of the Centre. Devotional
chaplets and prayer booklets were distributed to the
faithful, inviting all to continue their devotion to
the Holy Infant. The celebrations concluded joyfully
with a potluck meal and a time of fellowship,
beautifully organized by the Centre’s dedicated
staff and volunteers. Special appreciation goes to
Fr. Frank Sharma, OCD, Director of Mount Carmel
Spirituality Centre, for his leadership and
coordination in making this spiritual event a
resounding success. May the Divine Child of Prague
continue to draw many hearts to His love and bless
all who honour Him with childlike trust.
Drawn
by Grace: Sr. Miriam’s Journey into the Heart of
Carmel On
May 2, 2025, Sr. Miriam of the Immaculate Heart made
her First Profession in the Cloistered Carmelite
Order during a solemn Eucharistic celebration.
Presided over by Fr. Silvestre D’Souza OCD,
Provincial Superior, and concelebrated by three
Carmelite priests, the event was graced by AC
sisters and close associates of Mangalore Carmel.
This milestone marked her complete consecration to a
life of prayer and seclusion. Born on January 9,
1997, to Lt. Yohan Raj Ambadipudi and Pramila Kumari,
Sr. Miriam was formerly known as Mary Matilda. Her
early years were steeped in deep faith through
family prayer and parish involvement. During the
COVID-19 lockdown, she sensed a growing inner void
despite academic and professional pursuits. This
spiritual unrest stirred a desire for religious
life, which she shared with her father. Guided by
Sr. Christine A.C., she entered St. Ann’s Convent,
Mangalore. A pivotal moment came unexpectedly during
a hospital visit when she passed the Cloistered
Carmel near Fr. Muller Hospital. The sight of the
chapel’s grills evoked a profound spiritual pull.
Moved by this divine attraction, she expressed her
desire to join the cloister, surprising even her
superiors. Yet, with her father's support and
personal conviction, she remained steadfast. Sr.
Miriam began her discernment in 2021, entered Carmel
on April 26, 2022, and received the habit on May 14,
2023. Her First Profession is not merely a
conclusion but the beginning of a life immersed in
silence, prayer, and divine intimacy within Carmel.
Let us accompany her through our prayers.
“Do
You Love Me?” – A Novice’s Commitment to the Lord
First Profession of Br. Ronal Cloyten D’Cunha, OCD In
a moment marked by grace, solemnity, and profound
joy, Br. Ronal Cloyten D’Cunha, the last novice of
the current Tapovana formation group, made his first
religious profession on 20 May 2025, offering
himself wholly to the Lord and to the Church through
the vows of Chastity, Poverty, and Obedience. The
Eucharistic celebration, rich in spiritual depth and
sacred symbolism, was presided over by Rev. Fr.
Silvestre D’Souza, OCD, the Provincial Superior of
the Karnataka-Goa Province. He was joined by the
four Provincial Councillors and eleven friars whose
gracious presence added dignity and joy to the
occasion. The celebration witnessed the
participation of Br. Ronal’s family members, the
CSST Sisters of Kushalnagara, and numerous lay
faithful and well-wishers of Tapovana. In his deeply
reflective homily, Fr. Provincial spoke about the
dynamics of love between the Divine Bridegroom and
the chosen soul. Drawing inspiration from Jesus’
question to Peter— “Do you love me?”—he emphasized
that the Lord’s gaze rests not on the past with its
shortcomings, but on the present love and the future
commitment of the one He calls. It is this divine
love that beckons and sustains a vocation. Fr.
Wilfred Frank beautifully animated the liturgy and
served as the compère for the felicitation programme
that followed the Mass. A spirit of reverence and
devotion was further enhanced as the three novices
joined their voices in harmonious praise, creating
an atmosphere of prayer and worship.
THE PRIESTLY ORDINATION OF FR MOVIN DESMOND
PEREIRA On
the auspicious morning of May 21st, 2025, the
Carmelite family, along with the faithful of St
Vincent De Paul Parish, Katpady gathered in profound
joy for the priestly ordination of Fr Movin Desmond
Pereira. The Eucharistic celebration commenced at
9:30 AM in the parish church, with the sacred rite
of ordination conferred by Most Rev. Louis
Mascarenhas, Bishop of Allahabad and grand uncle of
the ordinandus. The liturgy was gracefully animated
under the guidance of Fr Deep Fernandes, who served
as the commentator for the occasion. The celebration
witnessed the prayerful participation of nearly 80
priests, making it a truly momentous gathering. The
choir, trained by Fr Alwyn Sequeira OCD and rendered
by the parishioners added a rich spiritual dimension
through their harmonious and soulful music. The
homily was delivered by Fr Silvestre D’Souza OCD,
the Provincial of the Karnataka-Goa Province. With
pastoral depth, Fr Silvestre centered his
reflections on the theme chosen by Fr Movin: “That
they may all be one.” Using apt illustrations and
theological deductions of priesthood, he exhorted
the faithful and the newly ordained to embrace the
unity of Christ’s body, the Church. The ordination
rite unfolded with grace and by 11:30 AM, Fr Movin
was joyfully welcomed into the presbyterate.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, due to an
unexpected heavy downpour, the felicitation program
was relocated to the parish hall of St Francis
Xavier Church, Udyavar. The event was meticulously
compered by Fr Dennis D’Sa, who led the program with
humour and warmth.
Overflowing
with Grace: Fr. Jesvin Tom Benoy Ordained to the
Priesthood at Pushpashrama On
the radiant morning of May 19, 2025, the Infant
Jesus Shrine at Pushpashrama, Mysuru, resounded with
joy and thanksgiving as the Discalced Carmelites of
the Karnataka-Goa Province witnessed the sacred
ordination of Deacon Jesvin Tom Benoy to the
priesthood. This profound moment was not only a
celebration of a personal vocation fulfilled, but
also a jubilant affirmation of God’s enduring call
within the Carmelite family. Hailing originally from
Kerala and raised in Delhi, Fr. Jesvin's journey to
the priesthood began in 2014 when, inspired by the
gentle whisper of God’s call, he entered the
Discalced Carmelite Order. His spiritual and
intellectual formation was nurtured across various
Carmelite houses: postulancy in Margao, novitiate in
Kushalnagara where he professed his first vows in
2016, philosophical studies at Pushpashrama, and a
Bachelor of Arts from St. Philomena’s College,
Mysore. His regency in Huvina Hadagali and
theological formation at St. Joseph’s Seminary,
Mangalore, further shaped him into a man of prayer
and purpose. He made his solemn profession in 2023
and was ordained a deacon in 2024. His diaconate
ministry at St. Joseph’s Church, Mira Road, Mumbai,
served as a final preparation for the sublime gift
of priesthood. Fr. Jesvin chose the inspiring theme
“Filled to the Brim with Grace,” drawn from 2
Corinthians 4:7 and the miracle at Cana, which will
serve as his priestly motto. Reflecting on this, he
shared: “Like the stone jars filled to the brim, I
come before the Lord—ordinary, yet ready to be
transformed. Through His grace, the water of my
efforts and the countless sacrifices made on my
behalf over the years will become the wine of
priestly ministry, poured out for His people.”
Feast
of Our Lady of Fatima Celebrated in Xellim The
Parishioners of Our Lady of Fatima Chapel,
Xellim-Loliem, gathered in large numbers on May 13,
2025, to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima
with deep devotion and reverence. The solemn
Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Fr.
Silvestre D’Souza, OCD, Provincial Superior of the
Karnataka-Goa Province of the Discalced Carmelites.
He was joined by Fr. Rovel D’Souza, OCD, Superior of
the Divine Springs Retreat Centre, Xellim; Fr.
Teodosio Fernandes, OCD, Chaplain of the chapel; Fr.
Alphonse Britto, OCD, Provincial Councillor; and
several other priests in concelebration. Preaching
on the theme, “Mother Mary inspires us to renew our
lives by deepening our life of prayer,” Fr.
Silvestre encouraged the faithful to seek inner
renewal and spiritual growth through a closer
relationship with God, drawing inspiration from the
life and example of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The
chapel choir led the liturgical singing, adding
beauty and solemnity to the prayerful atmosphere. At
the end of the celebration, Fr. Teodosio Fernandes
expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed
to the success of the feast, including the clergy,
choir, volunteers, and parishioners. The feast was
preceded by a nine-day novena featuring special
Masses and spiritual reflections. The entire
celebration stood as a powerful testimony to the
parish community’s unity and unwavering devotion to
Our Lady of Fatima.
A
Grateful Visit: Bishop Johannes Gorantla OCD in
Vancouver On
May 6, 2025, the Carmelite communities at Guardian
Angels and Little Flower Monastery, in Vancouver had
the joy and privilege of welcoming Most Rev.
Johannes Gorantla OCD, the Bishop of Kurnool, in
their midst. His visit held deep significance, as it
was during his tenure and under his attentive
guidance as the Definitor General that this
monastery was constitutionally recognized as a
Foundation. In 2020, he had also successfully
obtained the necessary approval from the Generalate
in Rome, thereby canonically establishing the Mount
Carmel Spirituality Centre in Edmonton. His
dedicated involvement not only helped strengthen our
presence in Canada but also led to its elevation as
a Provincial Delegation. The community expressed
heartfelt gratitude for Bishop Johannes’ unwavering
support, visionary leadership, and fatherly concern
for the growth of the Carmelites in Canada. His
presence among them was experienced as both a
blessing and an affirmation of their mission and
identity. After spending a few days with the
community in Vancouver, the Bishop is scheduled to
depart for Rome, where he would be attending the
installation ceremony of Rev. Fr. Saverio Cannistrà
OCD, the former Superior General, who was appointed
by Pope Francis as the new Archbishop of Pisa. The
community offered their prayerful wishes for Bishop
Johannes’ safe journey.
Ordained
to Love and Serve: A Carmelite Milestone May
2, 2025, was a day of immense grace and profound joy
for the Karnataka-Goa Province of the Discalced
Carmelite Order, as four of its members — Deacon
Prithesh Steeve Crasta (Vamanjoor), Deacon Pranay
Pereira (Permannur), Deacon Avith Pais (Belthangady),
and Deacon Stany Listan Pinto (Borimar) — were
ordained Priests. The solemn Eucharistic
celebration, held at the sacred precincts of Infant
Jesus Shrine, Carmel Hill, Bikarnakatte, Mangaluru,
was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao SJ,
Bishop of Shimoga. The liturgy of Ordination was
witnessed by a host of clergy — numbering 79 —
alongside religious sisters, the families of the
ordinandi, and a large gathering of faithful, all of
whom came together to offer thanks and praise to
God. This momentous event marked the culmination of
several years of intense formation — spiritual,
theological, pastoral, and human — undertaken by the
ordinandi in preparation for their sacred ministry.
In the last phase of their 13 years journey, they
were accompanied and guided by Rev. Fr. Melvin
D’Cunha, Superior of St. Joseph’s Monastery, and
Rev. Fr. Deep Fernandes, Master of Theology
Students. The celebration was further graced by the
presence of Rev. Fr. Silvestre D’Souza OCD,
Provincial Superior of the Discalced Carmelites of
the Karnataka-Goa Province, and his Council members.
In his homily, Bishop Francis Serrao reflected with
clarity and conviction on the sublime call to the
priesthood — a call to self-giving, humble service,
and fidelity. He urged the newly ordained to be
compassionate shepherds and faithful stewards of
God’s mysteries, ministering with zeal, humility,
and prophetic courage. He eloquently underscored the
role of the priest as both servant and dispenser of
the divine Sacraments. The four newly ordained
priests belong to a batch of six. The remaining two
deacons will be ordained in the coming days — one on
May 19 at Infant Jesus Shrine, Mysuru, and the other
on May 21 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Katpadi.
I
give myself to you forever… Twelve Novices make
their First Profession “The
harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few;
therefore, pray earnestly…” (Mt. 9:38)
In response to this divine call, the Lord of the
harvest has graciously sent twelve new laborers into
the vineyard of Carmel. On May 1, 2025, at Tapovana,
Kushalnagar, twelve novices — Brs. Aiqwin D’Souza,
Ashwin D’Souza, Aren Machado, Denzil D’Costa, Elroy
Monteiro, Jackson Crasta, Jostin Crasta, Melroy
Crasta, Nihal D’Souza, Rishal D’Souza, Royson Thoras,
and Sohan Rego — solemnly embraced their sacred
vocation by making their First Religious Profession.
The Solemn Eucharistic Celebration was presided over
by Rev. Fr. Silvestre D’Souza, Provincial Superior
of the Karnataka-Goa Province. He was joined by the
Provincial Councillors and a large gathering of
thirty-eight priests representing the Carmelite
Order, various religious congregations, and diocesan
clergy — a true testament to the ecclesial unity and
joy of the occasion. The deeply moving rite of
simple profession was witnessed by a multitude of
religious sisters, the families and friends of the
newly professed, benefactors and well-wishers of
Tapovana, and parishioners from the local Church of
Kushalnagara. In his homily, the Provincial urged
the brothers to offer themselves wholeheartedly to
Christ and the Church, taking inspiration from St.
Thérèse of Lisieux, who entrusted her life to God in
loving surrender at her own profession. He exhorted
them to remain rooted in God’s steadfast love and to
become beacons of that love to their communities and
beyond. The liturgy was prayerfully animated by Fr.
Santosh Menezes, while Fr. Wilfred Frank gracefully
compered the felicitation program that followed.
Newly professed brothers Aren and Ashwin expressed
their deep gratitude on behalf of their companions,
especially acknowledging the guidance, support, and
spiritual formation provided by their Novice Master,
Fr. Alfred Menezes and the formative community.
Three
Brothers Enter the Novitiate: Sacred Vestition
Ceremony at Tapovana, Kushalnagar On
the serene evening of April 30, 2025, the Tapovana
Novitiate House in Kushalnagar witnessed a moment of
profound spiritual significance as three
postulants—Brothers Brayan Jackson Sequeira, Ethan
Benedict Lobo, and Flen Johans Pinto —entered the
canonical novitiate of the Discalced Carmelite Order
through the sacred rite of Vestition. The ceremony
began at 7:00 p.m. with the praying of Vespers,
setting a contemplative tone for the evening. This
was followed by the Liturgy of the Word and the Rite
of Vestition, a deeply symbolic and transformative
moment in the life of a Carmelite. Presiding over
the ceremony was Rev. Fr. Silvestre D’Souza,
Provincial accompanied by the Provincial Councillors
and other friars. In his message, Fr. Provincial
offered an inspiring reflection, drawing parallels
between the novices’ journey and the experience of
the first disciples who heard Jesus say, "Come and
see." He invited the three young men to live the
novitiate year with openness, courage, and deep
faith—embracing the Carmelite way of life and
immersing themselves fully in the charism of the
Order and the mission of the Province. A
particularly moving moment in the ceremony was the
blessing of the Carmelite Emblem and the Holy
Scapular, symbols of commitment, protection, and
Marian devotion. Fr. Provincial, together with the
Councillors, personally vested each novice with the
scapular and emblem—marking their official entrance
into religious life. The rite concluded with the
singing of the Solemn Salve Regina, a hymn to Our
Lady, followed by the Kiss of Peace, symbolizing
fraternal communion and welcome into the Carmelite
family. The entire celebration was marked by
simplicity, reverence, and spiritual depth,
resonating deeply with all those present.
Easter
Gathering of the KG Province Friars in Italy The
friars of the KG Province currently serving in Italy
came together for the Easter gathering at Santa
Maria della Scala in Rome on the 23rd and 24th of
April 2025. Members from the communities of Empoli,
Lucca, and Teresianum joined the host community at
Scala for this special occasion. The highlight of
the gathering was the Solemn Eucharistic
Celebration, which was held at the Chapel that nests
the Sacred Relic of the Foot of our Holy Mother St
Teresa of Avila, served as the spiritual cornerstone
of the event. The Eucharist was presided over by Fr
Manoj Braganza, with Fr Arvin Tauro delivering a
profound reflection on the Word of God. This
Eucharist was celebrated in thanksgiving to God for
the 25 years of religious life of Frs Manoj and
Arvin. During the Mass, the friars also prayed for
the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, as well as
for Mr Maurice D’Souza, the beloved dad of Fr
Richard D’Souza who passed away in February 13,
2025. Following the Eucharistic Celebration, a brief
yet heartfelt felicitation program was held in the
refectory to honour the Jubilarians. Fr Aaron
Babusha proposed a toast to Fr Manoj, recognizing
him as his formator during Initiation, while Fr
Roshan Lobo offered words of appreciation to Fr
Arvin, his contemporary during the formation years.
As an expression of joy and fraternity, a cake was
ceremonially cut, and a buffet dinner was served.
After the dinner, a good number of friars proceeded
towards St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican to pay
their final homage to the mortal remains of Pope
Francis, marking a poignant moment of reflection and
reverence. The second day was dedicated to fraternal
bonding, filled with informal conversations, joyful
interactions, and the sharing of Carmelite community
life. The gathering concluded with the celebration
of the Holy Eucharist, followed by a sumptuous
lunch. In closing, Fr Ambrose D’Souza, the host
superior, extended his gratitude and bid farewell to
all participating friars.
Grace
Villa: A new Carmelite House blessed in Pune With
immense joy and heartfelt gratitude to God, the
blessing of the new Carmelite House, "Grace Villa,"
took place on April 23, 2023, at 7 PM in Pune. This
event marked a significant milestone in the life and
mission of the Carmelites in the Maharashtra region.
“Grace Villa” formerly the cherished residence of
the Thankachan family (Mr. Matthew Thankachan),
holds a rich spiritual heritage, since this family
is known for their deep faith and warm hospitality.
They have been gracious hosts even to Bishops and
Priests. Now they are happy that henceforth, it will
become a new dwelling for a Carmelite community. The
blessing ceremony was solemnly presided over by Rev.
Fr. Silvestre D'Souza OCD, the Provincial Superior,
in the presence of the Provincial Councillors,
Friars from the region, neighbours, and well-wishers
who gathered in joyful fellowship. During his
address, Fr. Provincial shared that establishing a
Carmelite House in Pune had long been a dream of the
province, and which has now been realized. During
the ceremony, Mr. Matthew Thankachan and his family,
the former owners of the house, were honoured with
deep appreciation for their cooperation, goodwill,
and the God-fearing spirit with which they passed on
this beloved home. We also recognize the efforts of
Fr. Daniel Christian OCD, whose dedication in
coordinating the legal processes involved in
acquiring the property was instrumental. We
gratefully acknowledge the support of Fr. Regan
D'Souza OCD, the President of MCCS, and the
community at Mira Road.
A
Spiritually Enriching Good Friday at Mount Carmel
Spirituality Centre The
Good Friday celebration held on April 18, 2025, at
Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre, Stony Plain,
Edmonton, was truly a memorable and spiritually
enriching experience. The day stood out particularly
because of the overwhelming number of faithful who
began arriving on the campus as early as 6:00 am. By
9:00 am, the crowd had swelled significantly. Fr.
Jerome Moras, the Superior of the house, estimated
that approximately 3,500 people visited the centre
throughout the day. The friars—Fr. Jerome, Fr. Frank
Sharma, and Fr. Kevin—began hearing confessions at
8:30 am, providing the sacrament of reconciliation
to hundreds of penitents. At 11:00 am, the solemn
and official Stations of the Cross commenced,
drawing around 700 participants. The devotion
concluded by 12:30 pm, after which the friars
resumed hearing confessions. At 3:00 pm, the Good
Friday Passion Liturgy began in the chapel, with
about 850 people in attendance. The chapel was
filled to capacity as pilgrims participated
reverently in the liturgy, which concluded at 8:30
pm. All the friars cooperated wholeheartedly to
ensure the smooth functioning of the liturgical
celebrations. The devotion, reverence, and prayerful

at the St. Thomas Aquinas Church Hall, where Bishop
Bergie took the opportunity to felicitate several
priests celebrating significant milestones in their
priestly ministry, including jubilee and ordination
anniversaries. He also extended warm congratulations
to those who had recently entered the seminary,
encouraging them in their vocational journey. On
this occasion, Bishop Bergie offered his best wishes

Bergie then invited Fr. Rudolf to briefly speak
about the inspiration behind his works. In his
reflection, Fr. Rudy emphasized the importance of
prayer in daily life, the Carmelite approach to
contemplative prayer, and the way the Carmelite
charism teaches prayer through witness and example.

daily life. Fr. Lancy’s talk enriched attendees’

growth, prayer, and service, strengthening the

organization.
This website was launched in 2006 during the silver
jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka-Goa Province of
the Discalced Carmelite Order.
The ancient Carmelites founded in the thirteenth century
were reformed in the sixteenth by two great doctors of
the church, Saints Teresa and John of the Cross. These
spiritual geniuses, while re-enforcing the contemplative
dimension of the Carmelites, inserted a decidedly
apostolic thrust into their spirituality, with special
emphasis on the missions.
During the seventeenth century, we find Carmelite
missionaries in several pockets along the west coast of
the Indian sub-continent : Surat, Diu, Goa, Verapoly. In
the eighteenth, Carmelites were appointed vicars
apostolic of "the Great Mogul" and Verapoly. They are
invited to attend to the pastoral needs of the Catholics
in Mumbai. In the nineteenth century, the sees of
Mangalore and Quilon were entrusted to the sons of St.
Teresa.
Finally, in the twentieth century, the Discalced
Carmelites opened their doors to Indian natives, who
would henceforth draw more freely from the rich
spiritual treasures of Sts. Teresa, John of the Cross,
and other Carmelite interreters of the Good News of
Jesus.
As Indian vocations multiplied, more and more
foundations were made, and grouped into "provinces".
Today among more than thirty provinces world-wide, there
are five Indian provinces . One of these is the
Karnataka-Goa province.
The aim of this web-site is, primarily to acquaint
readers with Carmelite history and tradition; to share
the spiritual insights of the great Carmelite saints and
also give glimpses of the life within the province to
all our associates. Articles of topical interest have
also been included.
