Lectio Brevis 2026
The Pushpashrama Institute of Philosophy and Religion inaugurated the Academic Year 2026–2027 with the Lectio Brevis held on Monday, 1 June 2026. The programme commenced with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Rev. Fr. John Francis Sequeira, Provincial, and concelebrated by fourteen priests. The inauguration was centered on the theme, “Nada and Todo: A Philosophical Journey with St. John of the Cross.”In his homily, Fr. Provincial encouraged the brothers to draw inspiration from the life and writings of St. John of the Cross, who was not only a mystic but also a profound scholar. He exhorted them to pursue intellectual excellence and through the harmonious use of reason and faith, ascend towards the ultimate goal of the Christian journey - union with God.

The formal inaugural session began with a prayer song, followed by a welcome address by the newly elected Rector, Rev. Fr. Alphonse Britto. In his address, he warmly welcomed the gathering and acknowledged the presence of the distinguished dignitaries, including Rev. Fr. Silvestre D’Souza, Vicar Provincial, and Rev. Fr. Oswald Crasta, Councillor and former Rector of the Institute. The dignitaries then lit the ceremonial lamp, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness through the light of wisdom. Thereafter, Rev. Fr. Wilfred Rodrigues, the outgoing Director of the Institute, presented the annual report, highlighting the significant academic, and extracurricular activities of the previous academic year. The occasion also witnessed the release of the official Pushpashrama Handbook for the year 2026–2027.

The highlight of the programme was the Lectio Brevis delivered by Mr. Gavin Jude Wilson, Head and Associate Professor of the Department of English at Maharaja’s College, Mysore. Speaking on the topic “When Stories Think: Literature and Philosophy,” he eloquently demonstrated the rich interplay between literature and philosophy, showing how these two disciplines complement one another in expressing the depth of human thought and emotion. Following the lecture, the students presented a melodious choral rendition based on the celebrated words of St. John of the Cross, “Mine are the heavens, mine is the earth…” The performance served as a fitting tribute to the Sanjuanist Jubilee.

Subsequently, the President of the event, Rev. Fr. John Francis Sequeira, delivered the presidential address. On this occasion, he also released “Cosmos,” the Institute’s annual literary magazine, showcasing the finest literary and artistic contributions of the students from the previous academic year. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Br. Denzil, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event. The gathering then came to a close with the singing of the Institute Anthem, marking a fitting beginning to the new academic year. The event was compered by Br Glevin and Br Aiqwin.
