Grace Villa: A new Carmelite House blessed
in Pune
With immense joy and heartfelt gratitude to God, the blessing of
the new Carmelite House, "Grace Villa," took place on April 23,
2023, at 7 PM in Pune. This event marked a significant milestone in
the life and mission of the Carmelites in the Maharashtra region.
“Grace Villa” formerly the cherished residence of the Thankachan
family (Mr. Matthew Thankachan), holds a rich spiritual heritage,
since this family is known for their deep faith and warm
hospitality. They have been gracious hosts even to Bishops and
Priests. Now they are happy that henceforth, it will become a new
dwelling for a Carmelite community.
The blessing ceremony was solemnly presided over by Rev. Fr.
Silvestre D'Souza OCD, the Provincial Superior, in the presence of
the Provincial Councillors, Friars from the region, neighbours, and
well-wishers who gathered in joyful fellowship. During his address,
Fr. Provincial shared that establishing a Carmelite House in Pune
had long been a dream of the province, and which has now been
realized.
During the ceremony, Mr. Matthew Thankachan and his family, the
former owners of the house, were honoured with deep appreciation for
their cooperation, goodwill, and the God-fearing spirit with which
they passed on this beloved home. We also recognize the efforts of
Fr. Daniel Christian OCD, whose dedication in coordinating the legal
processes involved in acquiring the property was instrumental. We
gratefully acknowledge the support of Fr. Regan D'Souza OCD, the
President of MCCS, and the community at Mira Road.
Fr. Sijo, the Parish Priest of St. Elias Chavara Church (Syro-Malabar),
located in the adjacent compound, graced the occasion with his
presence, accompanied by several parishioners. They are in the
process of shifting their Church elsewhere to a more spacious area.
The team of Advocates who had provided their valuable assistance was
also present and were honoured in gratitude for their professional
guidance and support. The Parish Priest of Resurrection Church, Fr
Paul Anthony could not make it, as he is busy with Easter blessings,
but has promised to visit the house, once our community is formed.
The evening concluded with a sumptuous dinner, fostering an
atmosphere of fellowship and shared joy. As Grace Villa opens its
doors to a community of Carmelite friars, we entrust it to the
loving care of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Our gratitude to Fr Prakash D’Cunha for the important role he has
played in this achievement, who from the part of the Provincial
Administration has meticulously followed the whole process to this
desired conclusion. God bless who those who have been instrumental
in this new gift to the Province.
